Quotable Quotes

This page is a collection, in no particular order, of quotes from climbers and others who have either shared the experience of a Fuji climb or who have had other notable things to say about the mountain.  I have added my own comments wherever I saw fit to do so.  I have obtained permission to use the majority of these quotes.  However, in consideration of everyone's privacy, I have removed all forms of personal identification from each comment.
  • "I will not be going up again to be twice the fool, but once is a foolish pleasure unmatched elsewhere ."  This is one of my favorite quotes; an e-mailed reminiscence of a climb made back in 1970. Used with permission.

  • "No spot in this world can be more horrible, more atrociously dismal, than the cindered tip of the Lotus as you stand upon it."  Wow!  What's this?  How about a line from an article written ... in 1898!  Go to my links page to read it.

  • "I aimed to have no goal except to just hang out with the mountain, and get to know it a bit, not necessarily to conquer it."  From another story you can read at my links page.

  • "Considering my shoes are wrecked, my legs hurt, I have a headache, and my shorts are ripped to shreds ..... it was excellent!"  Another favorite; I've been carrying this one around since '92.  Finally ..... a place to show it off!

  • "I never imagined I could get sunburned behind my ears!"  Hmmm...

  • "I never imagined I could get so dirty!"  Many iterations of this one.

  • "My jacket felt like a parachute ....."

  • "I didn't know there would be so much rock climbing."  ?????  Must have found a new route!

  • "I saw 11 people in a group, with only 2 flashlights ....."  This was in reference to a group descending in the darkness.  I'm really trying to control my urge to make a politically incorrect public comment here ...

  • "The memory of that [Fuji climb] is not a happy one right now."  It gets better after you recover, and get your film developed.

  • "The hill [?] never ended.  It was so depressing."  Uh huh.

  • "Every time I thought I was getting close, I looked up and saw another mile [?] I had to go."

  • "The descent was tougher than the ascent."  Many variations of this one, too.

  • "I am so happy that I don't have to do that again ..... When I reached [the] 5th station in Subashiri I shouted out loud!" Imagine that ... enough energy left to shout for joy!

  • "I don't want to see Mt. Fuji anymore.  I just want my bathtub!"

  • "Been there.....Done that.....Got the stick!"  A profound finality, if I ever heard one.

More to come .....

Just for fun, and a completely unfair (unequal) comparison, check out these quotes from some of the men and women who have achieved the goal of summiting Mt. Everest.  Here's a similar list.
